Declan (fighter) and Niamh (priest) cost nothing — capped at two per party so solo players can get off the ground. They work for experience and a share of loot.
Paid sellswords cost gold up front. Veterans and specialists only work with reputable contractors — build reputation to unlock Elara, Theron, and Rourke.
Companions gain XP and level under the same rules as your own characters. Releasing one is permanent — re-hiring costs the full price again.
